Fayaz Choudhary, a
44-year-old Markham resident, is the Progressive Canadian candidate in
the Markham-Unionville riding.
Mr. Choudhary, who is from Pakistan, came to Canada about 12 years
ago.
The Progressive Canadian Party is the same party that was in power
before Mike Harris and before the union of the Reform Party and
Conservative Party.
Mr. Choudhary said.
But he does not claim to be fiscally conservative. He is not in favor
of tax cuts.
"If you have tax cuts, how will the government run? The problem is
(our) money is not being used in the right way," he said.
His political experience includes being vice-president of the science
society at the Islamia Science College in Pakistan for 2-1/2 years and
serving as Toronto co-chairperson of the parent society at Armadale
Public School in Markham.
If elected, his goals include:
• Increasing funds for needy university students
• Changing Bill C36, the anti-terrorism act, which expands the power
of federal authorities and introduces the idea of 'preventative
arrest' where police can detain someone without a warrant if it is
necessary to stop a terrorist act. "It's against human rights. It's
like a police state, not a democracy. Without evidence, the police can
hold you without reason. They can catch anyone and put them in jail,"
Mr. Choudhary said.
• Banning guns. "It's easy for kids to get guns," he said
• Simplifying the immigration system.
